A woman walked down a pier pushing a buggy in which her young son sat. An orange half-moon stuck to the blue of the summer sky. On either side stretched a beach and a forest so close that the saffron sand mixed with the roots of the evergreens and undergrowth. A light wind blew in the ears of the woman and rustled the leaves of the forest and dried the wings of a perched cuckoo and tossed the spiral crown of the child’s head. His curious eyes caught sight of endless things of interest, like, the red balloon sinking into the evening sea, the still forest, the telescope at the end of the pier which he thought was a gun. And leaning over, safely strapped, the gaps in the moving pierboards revealing the thrashing tide even further below. Looking back over his shoulder he raised an arm and aimed two fingers at the forest, shooting… -Pshoo! A butterfly landed on his head. A bird fell from a tree. What the mother saw in the ensuing silence was an angel of death spreading its wings across her son’s face. They reached the shop at the end of the pier. It was closed. Seeing only herself in the window she moved closer and looked across the shelves of holiday souvenirs. One of them broke her heart.

about

In The Dreemplace (tracks 1 - 6): for fixed medium backing track and violinist, was commissioned by the Clonmel Junction Festival with funding provided by The Arts Council of Ireland, and which received its world premiere on July 1st 2023 at the festival with Aoife Ní Bhriain on violin, who also performs on this studio recording. Photo of her taken by Brian Lally.
The music was inspired by the life and work of James Joyce.
The text of track 6 is taken from page 527 of Joyce's Finnegans Wake, which references the title of the album, and is spoken by Isobel Mahon.

'The century of aeroplanes has a right to a music of its own' (Claude Debussy).
This bonus track was commissioned by pianist Therese Fahy with funds provided by the Arts Council of Ireland on the occasion of the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy in 1918. She gave it its first performances at the National Concert-hall in Dublin and at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris in 2018.
In this recording - Roger Doyle (software piano version)

Track 8 was composed in 2024 from material sketched out in 2005. Voiced by Mandy. Text and music © Roger Doyle.

The initial recording of my father on track 9 was made in 1970...the chords added in 2024.

The music came into being quickly, largely through one or two-take improvisations, intuitively played into software. The feeling is quite different from worked out music.

'...all the duskcended airs and shylit beaconings'
from page 222 of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

Scores available by request.
James Joyce and Claude Debussy - 2 artists I have the greatest admiration for.
